About Grass

2405_0078.jpg

Grass has shaped our world in many ways. Through creativity and dedication, we harness its power for agriculture, sport and life. From our early childhoods, we instinctively come to think of grass in happy, positive terms: grass surfaces can be platforms for sport events, escapes away from urban landscapes, summer parties and happy cows grazing in the pasture.  In every season, grass and its companion crops will offer nature’s pleasures to people around the world.

But grass is much more than “nice to have”, it is the world’s most important crop. From an agricultural perspective, grass and its companion crops such as legumes are crucial to helping feed the world’s growing population of humans and animals. It will also help to keep a healthy soil by combating issues such as erosion,  nutrient runoff and weeds and pests, while enhancing biodiversity and soil quality.  With roughly 20% of the world’s vegetation being made up of grass, this crop is important to keep everything turning the way it should – and making the world a “greener” place.

Grass challenges and solutions

Grass and related crops differ around the world. Nutritious and healthy grass for beef cows in tropical areas requires different traits than high-value grass for dairy cattle in temperate climates. Grass for sports fields must be strong and resistant to damage; grass in gardens must be soft. This requires a variety range suitable for a wide spectrum of climates and uses: Tasty and healthy forage with high nutritional value for livestock, fine-leaved and attractive green grass for parks and gardens, slow-growing grass for lawns, strong grass for sports fields and recreation.

Understanding and helping farmers, greenkeepers, athletes and families solve all kinds of grass-related challenges is at the heart of Barenbrug's business. Our breeding and seed enhancement efforts start with listening to you.  Your challenges are our challenges.

Your ambition is our ambition. We breed and develop solutions to accomplish your ambitions. That's why we don't want to start by displaying our products, but by understanding your challenges and needs.
